As many of you may recall, my wife and I planned our vegetable garden to save money on food. You may even have read my first update when we transplanted our small plants to the dangerous, risky outdoors. In case you don't recall (or don't want to go back and read it), it didn't go well. We were very discouraged and almost threw in the towel for the entire year. We knew we could always buy starter plants, but didn't want to give up. We learned our lesson and found important tips for transplanting plants ' make sure to read them if you want to start your own garden from seeds.
Operation Vegetable Garden ' Take 2
Instead of giving up on our 'well-planned-out' garden, we decided to give it another shot. This time, with the advice of a professional (our friend who worked on a farm for over a year), we waited until after the last possible freeze date. Apparently, each region has a date that marks the last possible day that the weather could get down to freezing. Don't ask me how this date is calculated, but our friend told us that it was the middle of May for our area.
The first thing we did was to plant new bean plants outside, without starting them indoors. Things were going well. It took them a little longer to grow than anticipated because we rushed into planting them (okay, so we didn't wait for the freeze date for the beans), but they came up without too much trouble. The only problem is that we didn't anticipate having to fight off the local critters. A bunny decided that it like the taste of our bean plants and chomped off all but one. GRRrrr! Talk about being ready to throw in the towel!
I was determined to not let this get me down. I am not going to lose my garden ' again! This, however, meant that we were going to need more protection. We already needed to buy starter plants for the other plants that died, so off to home depot. A few plants and fencing later, we were headed home to set up our garden. Below are some pictures:

As you can see, our vegetable garden is finally growing. Just the other day, I realized that we have a few tomatoes growing on one of our plants. Talk about success! I plan on keeping close count on the number of fruit we are able to produce with our small garden. Just as reminder, we are currently renting and this is the reason why we are planting in pots. For those of you who don't own your own home yet, you might want to consider this opportunity. Lastly, I am re-discovering how much fun it is to water the plants each day. There is just something about taking pride in growing something with your own hard work and determination.
